Troubleshooting Google Meet Audio and Video Issues

Fix microphone not working, camera not detected, echo, and poor video quality in Google Meet.

Troubleshooting Google Meet Audio and Video Issues

### Microphone Not Working

1. Before joining: click the microphone icon on the pre-join screen to test

2. In the meeting: click the microphone icon — confirm it is not muted

3. Click three dots → Settings → Audio → change microphone to the correct device

4. **Browser permissions:**

- Chrome: click the lock icon in address bar → Microphone → Allow

- Or go to: chrome://settings/content/microphone → allow meet.google.com

5. Check OS permissions:

- Windows: Settings → Privacy → Microphone → allow browser

- Mac: System Preferences → Security & Privacy → Microphone → allow Chrome/Firefox

### Camera Not Working

1. Click three dots → Settings → Video → select camera from dropdown

2. Check browser permissions (same as microphone above but for Camera)

3. Close other applications that might be using the camera (Zoom, Teams, FaceTime)

4. If camera works in other apps but not Meet: clear Chrome cache → chrome://settings/clearBrowserData

### Echo During a Meeting

Echo is usually caused by someone using speakers while a microphone picks up the audio:

  • Use headphones or a headset
  • Mute yourself when not speaking
  • Lower your speaker volume
  • Meet auto-cancels echo when using Chrome — use the Chrome browser instead of other browsers

### Poor Video or Audio Quality

1. Check internet: speedtest.net — you need at least 3.2 Mbps for HD video

2. Use a wired connection instead of Wi-Fi

3. Turn off camera for others in the meeting to reduce bandwidth

4. Close browser tabs and applications consuming bandwidth

5. In Meet → three dots → Change layout → select lower-bandwidth layout

### "Can't Join" or "Connecting" Loop

1. Refresh the browser page

2. Try a different browser (Chrome is most compatible with Meet)

3. Disable VPN temporarily — some VPNs block Meet

4. Clear cookies: chrome://settings/clearBrowserData

### Mobile App Issues

1. Force close and reopen the Meet app

2. Check app permissions: Settings → Apps → Meet → Permissions → Microphone and Camera

3. Update the Meet app to the latest version

4. Reinstall if issues persist

### Admin: Meet Quality Tool

admin.google.com → Reports → Google Meet quality tool

Shows per-session audio/video quality, packet loss, jitter for all meetings in your organisation.
