How do I point my domain to my VPS using an A record?

Add an A record in your DNS settings so your domain opens the website running on your VPS.

What you need

  • The IPv4 address of your VPS
  • Access to your domain's DNS settings

Step 1: Open DNS settings

Log in where your domain's nameservers are managed. This is usually your domain registrar or DNS provider.

Step 2: Add an A record for the main domain

  • Type: A
  • Name or Host: @
  • Value: your VPS IP address
  • TTL: automatic, or 3600

Step 3: Add www

Add a second record.

  • Type: CNAME
  • Name or Host: www
  • Value: yourdomain.com

Or add another A record for www with the same IP address.

Step 4: Wait and test

Changes usually appear within minutes to a few hours. Test with nslookup yourdomain.com and check it returns your VPS IP.

Then

Set up your web server, such as Nginx, to answer for your domain, and add an SSL certificate.

Common problems

  • Old records for the same name conflict. Remove them.
  • You edited DNS at the wrong company. Check which nameservers your domain really uses.
