What is the difference between a managed and an unmanaged VPS?

A managed VPS is looked after by the hosting team; an unmanaged VPS is looked after by you.

Unmanaged VPS

You get a server with root access. You install software, secure it, update it, monitor it and fix problems yourself. It suits developers and system administrators who want full control.

Managed VPS

The hosting team sets up and secures the server, applies updates, monitors it, takes backups and helps when something goes wrong. You focus on your website or application.

Which should I choose?

  • Choose unmanaged if you have the skills and time to administer a Linux server.
  • Choose managed if downtime would cost you money and you do not have a dedicated administrator.

Can I switch later?

Yes. You can usually move your applications to a managed plan as your needs grow. Contact our team and we will help plan the move.
