How to Transfer a Domain Without Losing Your SEO Rankings
Transferring a domain to a new registrar or rebranding to a new domain carries real SEO risk — but that risk is entirely manageable with the right process.
Back to BlogRegistrar Transfer vs Domain Rebrand
Transferring a domain between registrars carries almost zero SEO risk. Your domain name, DNS records, and URLs stay identical; only the registrar changes. A domain rebrand requires a 301 redirect strategy to pass link equity.
Transferring Between Registrars Safely
Unlock the domain at your current registrar and request an EPP/Auth code. Initiate the transfer at your new registrar and enter the auth code. The transfer takes 5–7 days during which your domain and DNS continue to work.
Domain Rebrand: The 301 Redirect Strategy
Keep the old domain active and redirect every URL to its equivalent on the new domain using 301 (permanent) redirects. A 301 tells search engines that the move is permanent and transfers approximately 90–99% of the page's link equity.
Updating Google Search Console
After implementing 301 redirects, verify the new domain in Google Search Console and use the Change of Address tool under Settings. Submit an updated XML sitemap for the new domain.
Expected Timeline and Recovery
A domain rebrand typically shows a temporary ranking drop over 2–8 weeks as Google processes the change, followed by recovery to approximately original levels within 3–6 months when redirects are implemented correctly.
